Housebuilding Trip with YoungLife

The opportunity became available for me to join a group of Arizona State University students to head down to Rocky Point, Mexico for a weekend to build a house. Partnered with 1Mission, I led with Arizona State University YoungLife and was able to drive down to Mexico from Tempe, Arizona and complete a house in under 72 hours.

An amazing experience this was, to say the least. Everything we built was by hand and with ordinary tools (power tools were out of the picture completely). Personally, I thought the task would be easy considering there were 20 of us per build site but I was definitely not accounting for the amount of physical labor that would be needed to raise a home from the dirt.

The most rewarding part of the weekend was the dedication of the home to the humble family who thanked us with tears in their eyes. Keys were handed from our dirt-soaked and blistered hands over to their already calloused hands. This house they were receiving was not for free in any sense, they had put hours upon hours into bettering their own community. We were blessed to just be able to come in for a weekend and use our power in numbers to create a home for the family.

If possible, I would go back and do this every weekend. The fulfillment of creating something with your hands that will protect a family is incomparable.
