Being happy where you are -- it's a great thing (they say)!
So often, I catch myself wondering what it would be like if I would have stayed in my hometown or if I wouldn't have transferred half way through my undergraduate schooling or if I would have picked a career that took me to the opposite side of the country. I wonder what it could have looked like for my life if I would have made different choices. These questions usually creep into my brain when I'm feeling uncertain about my current situation or when I am worried that what I am doing isn't the best investment of my time and my energy. Honestly, it's ceaseless worrying that only distracts me from the good parts of my life and hinders me from really being content and happy where I'm at.
These empty thoughts add zero value to my thought process though. They often are fueled by an empty longing for an ideal "greener grass" situation or they are based on doubts and anxieties which thwart all growth. Regret creeps into my consciousness and causes my mind racing to explore alternative, self-created "What if" possibilities.
I paint this picture of how my mind ceaselessly tries to control my consciousness and inhibit me from focusing on the good because it's a daily battle for me. I'm here to say (in this blog) that you're not alone in feeling this "type of way" that I've so eloquently (excuse my journaling method of word vomit) described. I'm here to let you know you're not crazy! Plain and simple, that's all I'm saying because if you're crazy that means I'm crazy and that's the last thing I can add to my grocery list of personal downfalls. For me, reading from other's experiences is something that has always helped me, in addition to my faith and my friends and family (of course, because without these great people I'd be in some sketchy/compromising situation by now).
I'm here to ask why we let our selves focus on the "what-ifs" and the feeling of regret? Why, when we only have so many days here to live would we focus on such a bleak investment of our energy and thought process? HELLO!! We all do it, but why?! Everything I say from here is simple and you probably already know what I'm about to say but I believe that affirmation and confirmation from others can always help... like a pep rally, who really needs to be told that winning is the fun thing to do (we all know that, duh) but it's still helpful to focus our energy on the winning outcome rather than sitting among our peers in a musky-wrestling-equipment smelling gym with hand painted signs hoping we all lose.. you know what I mean? Hopefully, my dated pep rally example wasn't lost on everyone, ignore it though if that was you, please and sorry.
What we really should be focusing on is staying fully invested in the present rather than always looking back over our shoulders to see out pasts through a regret, doubt-filled-tainted lens that leaves us with little room for flattery or grace. The only control, available to us, at this point, rests within our current situation and it is only in that present moment that abundant growth can start to take place. Stay focused on the now and grow big from there. Stick your roots in the ground wherever you are, get involved and invested in the people around you and start making a real influence in the immediate sphere that is around you, NOW, at this chapter in your life. Everything happens for a reason, yes, which you know in your head but often fail to grasp with your hear. But believing that there is good that can come from even the worst situation can give serious hope to anyone who may be wondering, "Why am I here? How does this benefit my overall goal? What point does this awful situation serve me?" These are all questions that have been beaten into my brain, as I'm sure with yours as well and the more I focused on these negative questions, the less I was able to improve my current situation (well "duh", you're probably saying but still). Wherever you are at today, is where you are supposed to be at, TODAY. Keep investing in the place you find yourself in and realize that only you can make your patch of grass, that you are standing on today, the greenest patch of grass that you could ever move to. So water the shizz out of that patch and invest in the lot you have now.
This may all sound cheesy and watered down, but isn't that what we do? We overcomplicated everything when really, it's far more simple than we make it out to be. Dismiss the negativity and the confusion from your life and realize that there is no room for regret filled thoughts or notions because at the end of the day, all we have is that day. Thank you for partaking in my word spew of pep-rally mentality thinking but it's what helps me and hopefully it helps you.
